Knees VS Hips Shimmies

Do you know the difference between knees and hips shimmy? 🤔🤔🤔 They look very similar, but there are actually different movements.

Here are three major differences:

  1. Knees shimmy is initiated from moving your knees. 👉Hips are simply responding to what’s going on. During hips shimmy the drive force of the movement is the up-and-down motion of your hips. 👉Knees are jut relaxed and they give space for hips to move freely. Although visually they will be moving too.

  2. You start your knees shimmy with a straight legs position. For hips shimmy you do NEED to have your knees bent.

  3. It’s typical (although not mandatory) to keep your weight centre a bit more forward during the knees shimmy, but it must be solidly over your heels if you want to do nice hips shimmy.

These movements indeed are very similar, but knowing BOTH techniques will give you more freedom with choosing with shimmy to layer on top of specific steps or moves. You can use whichever one works better for each situation. 😄👍 That’s why I actually have two separate intensives inside the Iana Dance Club, each one for a different shimmy (well, it’s actually three intensives in total cos there is also a vibration shimmy 😅)

Let me know if you fully understand knees vs hips shimmy, and which one is more difficult for you. 😘❤️
