What is Mahraganat?
First of all, Mahraganat is a style of music, also known as Steet Shaabi, or Egyptian Electro. From the name itself you can guess that it came from Egypt, and that it is a combination of Shaabi music with modern electronic instruments, as well as influences from the Western pop culture.⠀
There is a common misconception among belly dancers that Mahraganat originated in 2011 during the Egyptian Revolution. In fact Mahraganat existed way before it, but became really popular during those uncertain times. ⠀
Originally this style was associated with some shady business, gangs and low-reputation street-music. The main reason was because of lyrics: many songs were about drugs, sex, included slang and curses… But with time it changed.👇⠀
Today we can hear many cute and lovely songs in Mahraganat style that have nothing to do with the inappropriate lyrics, and this genre became loved all around the Arab world.❤️⠀
Since Mahraganat has a very particular mood, this style may feel uncomfortable for many dancers. Diving into such topic can be a great opportunity to train your acting skills, loosen up emotional boundaries related to shyness, and get out of your comfort zone. And for this I have a very special online program at the Iana Dance Club!
In this intensive you will learn a full choreo to a Mahraganat (Street Shaabi) song Al Bet Di Taabani by Tito & Hoda Bondok. Along with a step-by-step guidance for your learning process, you will receive information about the essence of Mahraganat, understanding the style, and the art of building a character in your dance.
Check out this special 8-week online intensive on Mahraganat.
